19 Killed as Typhoon Bilis Hits Mainland

At least 19 people fell victim to Typhoon Bilis, which swept across Fujian, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces between Wednesday and Sunday, causing hundreds of millions of yuan's worth of damage to the regions, according to Tuesday's Chinadaily.

Bilis, which slammed into Fujian Province last Wednesday, brought with its torrential rains and landslides, killing eight people in the city of Longyan, four in Dehua Country and one in Anxi County.

Meanwhile, the typhoon affected at least 400,000 hectares of farmland in Longyan.

Landslides occurring in the wake of Typhoon Bilis also killed three people in the city of Longquan in east China's Zhejiang Province on Saturday morning.

Over the past few days, three more people were reported killed by Typhoon Bilis and torrential rains in eastern Guangdong Province, which suffered direct economic losses of 500 million yuan (60.2 million US dollars).
