Hainan: Kingdom of Butterflies

The Hainan Island in the South China Sea, China's second largest island after Taiwan, has hundreds of different butterfly species and is worthy its name of a kingdom of butterflies, said a group of experts.

The experts, during their recent investigation, have identified 609 butterfly species or half of China's total butterfly species there.

"The most typical place there is the Jianfengling rainforest which is one of the world's most concentrated area for butterflies," the experts said in a report.

They said that there are 449 butterfly species there, among which 35 were discovered there for the first time, and China's biggest and smallest butterflies are both living there.

A valley in the Jianfengling Hills was even called by the experts as "butterfly valley," since countless butterflies often gather there, making the valley a colorful belt.
