Chinese Woman Has Her Broken Fingers Restored

A 28-year-old woman had her five fingers cut from her hand in an accident but had four of them

successfully reconnected after being operated on at the Xijing Hospital, based in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

The patient Shan was working at a printing company in Chang'an County. She had the five fingers of her right hand cut off by a cutting machine when she was working there recently.

Shan was taken to the Xijing Hospital four hours later after the accident occurred.

Doctor Cong Rui reconnected Shan's index finger, middle finger and the pinkie finger to her hand and removed the cut ring finger, which could not be connected, to make the thumb.

At present, all the fingers are in good condition, according to the doctor.

Experts said that the function of the thumb accounts for 40 percent of the whole hand, while the ring finger only accounts for 10 percent. Removing the broken ring finger to make the thumb can guarantee the normal function of the whole hand.

Xijing Hospital successfully reconnected 10 fingers for a patient in 1986, that were cut off. It was the first case in the world. In 1993 and 1996, the hospital also successfully helped two patients restore their nine cut-off fingers.
