Li Peng Arrives for Millennium Parliament Leaders Conference

Li Peng Arrives for Millennium Parliament Leaders Conference
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), arrived in New York Monday afternoon for a millennium conference to be held at the United Nations headquarters later this week.

After a 12-hour flight over the Pacific, the Chinese NPC leader was warmly greeted by resident Chinese officials at the airport and by a crowd of hundreds of overseas Chinese and Chinese Americans around the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, where Li and his entourage are to stay.

The Conference of Presiding Officers of National Parliaments will be held from August 30 to September 1, with the participation of about 150 parliament leaders from around the world. The role to be played by parliaments in the next century will be examined at the three-day gathering, according to sources close to the meeting sponsored by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Li will deliver a speech at Wednesday's opening ceremony, expounding China's stance on international cooperation. He will also meet with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, IPU leaders and parliamentarian chiefs from varied countries, according to Chinese official sources.

He is scheduled to leave New York Friday night to visit Iceland,Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Russia. He will meet with parliament and government leaders and people from all walks of life to "deepen mutual understanding and trust and stimulate healthy and steady relations with these countries," a spokesman for the delegation said.
