Arafat Says Accord with Israel Still Possible

A peace accord with Israel is still possible despite the collapse of the Camp David summit, Spanish and Palestinian leaders said on Sunday.

Visiting Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, during a private meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Maria Aznar, reaffirmed the Palestinian positions on Jerusalem and other key issues such as the return of refugees and water rights.

Aznar said Spain and other European Union members will acknowledge a Palestinian state whether Arafat would declare its establishment on September 13 as originally planned or delay the announcement.

Aznar reaffirmed that Spain is determined to cooperate with Palestine at any time and do its best to push forward the Middle East peace process.

Arafat left later on Sunday for the Moroccan city of Agadir to attend a meeting with Muslim and Arab leaders on the status of Jerusalem.
