Minister Urges to Fire Law-Breaking Medical Staff

China's Minister of Health Zhang Wenkang Monday urged local authorities and hospitals to curb rampant malfeasances among medical workers and dismiss those who have violated the law.

The minister made the call at a teleconference on improving the style of work in the medical sector and promoting medical reform in urban and rural areas.

If the malpractices are not stopped, the health and safety of the people will be threatened and the general goal of medical reform will not be realized, Zhang warned, who called for more efforts to educate medical workers on professional ethics and law.

In recent months, a series of malpractices and illegal activities by local hospitals have been exposed by the media.

In one instance, doctors at a hospital in Harbin, the provincial capital of Heilongjiang, profiteered from patients by making changes in medical records and forcing the patients to stay on in the hospital for more days.
