Li Peng Leaves for UN Meeting and Five-Nation Visit

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), left Beijing for New York today for the Conference of Presiding Officers of National Parliaments to be held at the United Nations headquarters.

Li will deliver a speech at the August 30 opening ceremony of the conference expounding on China's stance on international cooperation.

He will also meet with UN Secretary-General, leaders of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and parliament leaders from countries during the conference. It is expected that Some 150 major leaders of parliaments from countries across the world will attend the conference.

After the conference from August 30 to September 1, Li will visit Iceland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Russia starting from September 2.

During Li's visit to the five nations, Li will meet with parliament and government leaders and people from all walks of life to deepen mutual understanding and trust and stimulate healthy and steady relations with these countries.

Li's entourage includes his wife Zhu Lin, Secretary General He Chunlin of the NPC Standing Committee, members of the NPC Standing Committee Wang Weicheng, Li Boyong, Fan Jingyi, Shi Yuxiao, and other senior officials.

Among those seeing Li off at the Great Hall of the People this afternoon were Vice-Chairman Tian Jiyun of the NPC Standing Committee, State Councilor Luo Gan, Vice-Chairman Tomur Dawamat of the NPC Standing Committee, and other senior officials.
