Nearly 40% Chinese Consumers Buy Smuggled Cell Phone

In the first half of this year, around 5 million cellular phones or 38% of cell phones sold in China were smuggled, according to the Ministry of Information Industry.

In recent years, smuggling activities on the cell phone market has been very rampant. Many cell phones enter the market through illegal channels. Some criminals have forged cell phone documentation and wrapped the smuggled cell phones with legal packaging.

According to the China Economic Times, if the average cost of a cell phone is about 2000 yuan, 10 billion yuan worth of smuggled cell phones entered China's market during the first half, a huge loss for Chinese customs.

The statistics show that the domestic retail volume of cell phones in the first half reached 20.77 million units. New cell phone users grew by 15.99 million in the first half.
