More than 2,500 young volunteers have answered the call of the Chinese Communist Youth League's (CCYL) and will put aside their studies or jobs to work for one year in the battle against poverty in 18 poor counties of the country.
Over 160 representatives of the volunteers met in the Chinese capital of Beijing Sunday and vowed to do their best for the poverty-relief efforts in the counties scattered in 11 provinces and autonomous regions, according to today's China Youth Daily.
Zhou Qiang, first secretary of the CCYL Central Committee, said at the meeting that the CCYL organizations at all levels should vigorously support the country's poverty-relief work.
Over the past four years, over 5,000 young volunteers have been mobilized by CCYL to work in 150 under-developed counties and introduce new ideas and technology to help local economic development.
