China Stages Large-scale Culture Event in Washington D. C.

The Washington D. C. segment of a 26-day-long Chinese cultural crusade in the United States was officially kicked off on Saturday (Sunday Beijing Time).

An 80-minutue music display staged by China Traditional Music Orchestra , and a photographic art exhibition of China's unique culture at the J. F. Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts were attended by more than 1,000 and hailed as a great success.

The performance and show will last for a few days, and up to 10,000 people are expected to attend, said an official with China's Ministry of Culture. The ministry and the State Information Office of the State Council, China's cabinet, co-sponsored the event.

Zhao Qizheng, minister of the State Information Office, will make a key-note speech at the US National Press Club on Wednesday, expounding on the 5,000-year incessant Chinese culture and why varied and distinct cultures on the earth should and could co-exist , respecting and learning from one another.

``We hope the performance and display of the photographic works will help people of the United States who have not visited China to get a glimpse of what the Oriental Chinese culture is, `` said Meng Xiaosi, Vice-Minister of Culture at a reception held at the Chinese Embassy.

``The 26-day cultural event in a number of US big cities including New York, Washing D. C. Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, coded as 2000 Experience Chinese Culture in the United States, is aimed at increasing understanding between two peoples of China and US,''said Liu Xiaoming, charge d'affairs of the embassy.

A careful-selected repertoire combined both famous traditional melodies and Western masterpieces, brought unique Chinese cultural flavour to the US audience. The show of traditional Chinese music includes orchestral and solo pieces played with major traditional music instruments including Dizi, Pipa and Erhu.

``The music coming out from those special instruments which I seldom heard of is fantastic and I think I am profoundly intrigued by them and the high-level display by the performers,'' said Virgina A. Weil, a D. C. resident.

And, the photo show also proved to be alluring. ``This is real wonder land,'' murmured an old visitor, after a long time piercing a picture called ``Piety'', which shows a throng of Tibetan people kneeling on snowing slope in front of a giant plaque of. Tanka, a Buddhism painting.
