China Unveils Team for Sydney Olympics
A total of 311 athletes including 107 male and 204 female participants will take part in 25 of the 27 Olympic disciplines at Sydney. China sent 309 athletes to the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and placed fourth in the final medal standings with 16 gold medals. "We have two main goals for the Sydney Olympics," Yuan Weimin, President of the Chinese Olympic Committee, said at a news conference here on Sunday. "One is to surpass the medal haul from the Atlanta Games four years ago, and the other is to make success not only from the athletic but also from the spiritual perspective." In order to achieve spiritual success, which means to ensure a clean Olympics for the Chinese athletes, China has carried out 2,268 doping tests on the athletes this year. Over 300 of which were blood tests and 53.6 percent tests were done out of competition, Yuan said. Chinese athletes could win up over 20 gold medals at Sydney, mainly from weightlifting, gymnastics, table tennis, shooting, badminton, diving and judo events, Yuan predicted. But he declined to give an exact number in his prediction. Yuan said it will be a tough battle between France, hosts Australia and China for the fourth spot in the final medal tally.
