Tripartite Effort to Develop Molecular Biosciences in ChinaThe Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Hong Kong Chinese University and Hong Kong Anxin Biology Sci-Tech Co. Ltd. HK reached an agreement Wednesday, according to which 100 million HK dollars of investment will be used for carrying out study on molecular biology in regard to health and food grains.According to work arrangement by the three related parties, multidiscipline basic research and development of resources will be launched especially in the fields of biochemistry, pharmacology, and genetics. Two research centers will be set up respectively in Shanghai Academy of Biosciences and Hong Kong Chinese University to be helped by a supporting fund jointly founded for undertaking long-term research. On top of a human genome framework map having been completed this year, an all-genetic map along with sequence examination into some major genetic species as of humankind, rice and others will soon be completed, said Lu Yongxiang, president of CAS. Pharmaceutical production, health care and agriculture will face new reforms when new developments are made for undertakings of the genome project and far-reaching influence will be found on socioeconomic development as a result of breakthroughs made in biological research. Tripartite cooperation is an effective operational form for a combined development of science, technology and economy, which will set an example in pushing scientific research and hi-tech development both in China's mainland and Hong Kong, Lu added. |
