Libya Says It Wants to Normalize Ties with USLibya said Thursday in Tripoli it wants to re-establish normal relations with the United States after improving ties with Europe."A solution can be found to any problem," Hasuna Shaush, of the foreign ministry's information department, told AFP on his country's lack of relations with Washington for the past 20 years. He said relations between the two countries could make "a new start if they were based on dialogue and mutual interest." Normalization could have "positive effects not only for the two countries but for the region and the world." "Our efforts on behalf of peace and cooperation among peoples are from now on recognized," he said, ticking off Libyan efforts to resolve conflicts in Africa and the negotiations conducted by the Kadhafi Charitable Foundation to free hostages in the Philippines. US-Libyan relations have recently taken a positive turn but the "United States must realize the importance of Libya, just as European countries have," he said. Washington has blacklisted Libya since 1981, accusing the north African country of sponsoring international terrorism. |
