China's IT Industry Lags Behind Developed Countries

The information technology industry, as a core of state of art technology, will turn out a driving industry for the growth of China's economy and social development for a long time to come. But in this field we still have a large gap to fill up as compared with that of developed countries, said Qu Weizhi, Vice-minister of Information Industry at the 2000 International Forum on the Information Industry.

This gap is manifested in the following four aspects:

First, China still lags behind other countries in some key IT technologies, such as the designing and manufacturing of high-speed CPU chip and memory, basic software and ability in developing some large application system. Besides, the IC products made in China can only meet 20% needs at the domestic market and that of software, not more than 30%.

Secondly, the IT industry has not yet sneaked into every field of Chinese economic society. Its application in industry, agriculture, service and other fields is by no means extensive, and to transform the traditional industries by making use of information technology and IT industry we still have an arduous task to fulfill.

Thirdly, industry structure is not rational. Some enterprises small in scale and low in efficiency they are duplicated and decentralized, and therefore lack of competitiveness.

Fourthly, the management system, policy and regulations can not meet the demands for the fast growing IT industry.
