IBM, Redflag-Linux to Team on Linux Development

IBM will jointly develop Linux operating system with the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Redflag-Linux.com as an important part of its overall plan in the Asia-Pacific region to give complete support to Linux, according to recent China Economic Times.

Redflag-Linux.com has also seen a lot of action in the market recently. The company recruited Liu Bo, former vice president of Microsoft Corp., as president and CEO of the company. It has also formed a strategic alliance with the Hong Kong Xinhua Co. and established the Hong Kong Redflag-Linux Support and Training Center.

On August 4, it released its Redflag-Linux desktop version 2.0 in Beijing, which attracted the attention of industrial circles. And, the company has basically formed its management team and marketing strategies.

Irving Wadawsky-Berger, vice president of IBM in charge of technologies and strategies, met with Chairman Sun Yufang and Liu Bo of Redflag-Linux.com this month. The two parties discussed the goals and strategies of their cooperation and unanimously agreed on their overall cooperation on the Chinese market, the article said.

The two parties' cooperation plan is extensive. IBM will preinstall the Redflag-Linux operating system in its large-scaled computers S/390, which is widely used in China's banks and securities systems.

Meanwhile, IBM's person in charge of DB2, Middleware and Lotus series software has met with Redflag-Linux.com in Beijing, and the two parties have reached a principle agreement on the bundling of the software with the Redflag-Linux platform. IBM's Netfinity server products have been tested on Redflag-Linux and the bundling plan is under way.

Xiao Zhenbang, IBM's Linux marketing manager in the Asia-Pacific region, said that IBM and Redflag-Linux.com would jointly develop the Linux operating system for the IBM RS6000 product series, which includes workstations, enterprise servers and supercomputers.

IBM and Redflag-Linux.com are currently discussing the Linux standards. The two parties will invite the Linux International Standardization Association to hold a symposium in Beijing at the end of August. (Chinadaily)
