IOC Chief Meets with COC President Yuan Weimin

Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday wished that Beijing make further efforts in bidding for hosting the 2008 summer Olympic Games.

As a friend of the Chinese people for many years, Samaranch said, he had noticed that China has made considerable achievement in recent years in politics, economy and sports.

Samaranch wished Beijing good luck in its Olympic bid and hoped Chinese athletes do well in the coming Olympic Games in Sydney.

The IOC chief was speaking in a meeting with Yuan Weimin, Minister in charge of China's State General Administration of Sports, at the Lausanne-based IOC headquarters.

Yuan, who was recently elected President of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), expressed thanks to Samaranch for his long-standing help and support to the Chinese sports.

The COC chief also promised to make further efforts during his term of office in further developing the relations between the IOC and COC.

Among those president at the meeting was Tu Mingde, COC's secretary-general.

The COC delegation is visiting Lausanne on the invitation of the IOC chief.
