MNCs Invest in China's IT Industry

As China's economy continues its rebound in the first half, the major players in the global IT market have increased their investments into the Chinese IT industry.

Compaq invests a lot in China

Compaq vice-president Yu Xinchang says that as Compaq increases its investment into China and works more closely with local companies, it is developing faster.

In the last six months, Compaq's total investment into China has exceeded US$10 million and it became the only company to transfer the ownership of a core IT technology firm to the Chinese government without compensation.

In the second quarter, the Greater China region grew 16%, faster than both the North American and Asian-Pacific markets.

Currently, Compaq has 70% of the China Telecom and China Unicom billing system. The billing systems for mobile phones in Taiwan and Hong Kong have also used Compaq's system. Compaq also has 50% of China's limited network management system.

Yu Xinchang says that Compaq will continue to invest heavily in China.

Motorola's investment increases 16 billion

For a long time, Motorola has wanted to build a semiconductor manufacturing facility and telecom product manufacturing base in China.

On August 21, Motorola signed an agreement to build a 16 billion yuan chip-making complex in Tianjin. "The site will become one of the largest integrated semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the world, and the most advanced in China," company chairman and chief executive officer Christopher Galvin said.

This brings Motorola's total investment into China up to 28.56 billion yuan, making it the largest foreign investor in China.

Ericsson purchases 14.9 billion

In order to localize Ericsson's telecom sector in China, Ericsson has set up a system which completely localizes the process of planning, coordination, production and supervision.

Beginning this year, Ericsson spent more than 40 million yuan on purchases in China and will spend 14.9 billion yuan in China before the year is out. Ericsson's exports will reach US$460 million.

Ericsson already has 23 offices in China and 10 joint ventures with local companies. They have set up research and development centers in Beijing and Shanghai.
