Beijing Uncovers Drug Smuggling by EMS

Beijing Customs confirmed Thursday that they recently found 78.5 grams of marijuana in a magazine sent to Japan by Express Mail Service (EMS) and caught the sender, who had a Ghana passport.

The suspect, Kofi Amanfo Tawiah, confessed that he had started selling drugs since he came to China in 1995. He has sent drugs to foreign countries by mail using fake names and addresses many times. The case is under further investigation.

Smugglers tend to send drugs by mail because it is less risky. The Customs office has uncovered three cases of drug smuggling through EMS, confiscating altogether 3.1 grams of heroine and 155.85 grams of marijuana this year.

Beijing Customs officials have discovered 366.1 grams of heroine, 269.65 grams of marijuana and 2,002 grams of "ice" in the past seven years.
