Landslide Blocks Sichuan-Tibet Highway

A landslide caused by heavy rains in Baxoi County, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, has blocked the highway linking Sichuan Province and Tibet.

A local official report Wednesday said that a total of 800,000 cubic meters of mud and stone covered nearly 3 kilometers of the highway and the landslide also obstructed the Lengqu River causing it to form a 20-meter deep lake at the upper reaches.

More than 300 vehicles and 600 passengers were stranded because of the incident and direct economic losses are estimated at 10 million yuan.

The current landslide was another major disaster that happened on the Sichuan-Tibet highway this year. A landslide occurred on the highway in Yigong Township in Tibet on April 9.

Troops stationed in Tibet have been mobilized for the disaster-relief effort and 100,000 cubic meters of mud and stone have already been cleared away.
