Deputy Commissioner Sentenced to Three Years Imprisonment
Yuan Baizhong, former deputy commissioner of Simao Prefecture in southwestern China's Yunnan Province, was sentenced today to three years imprisonment, with a four-year reprieve, by the Simao Intermediate People's Court.
Fifty-six year old Yuan was charged with taking bribes worth 40,000 yuan. In 1998, a manager of an interior decoration company gave Yuan 20,000 yuan for his "role" in a local airport project bidding and account settlement.
The same manager also gave Yuan a mobile phone worth 10,000 yuan. And another manager also gave him 10,000 yuan during the 1998 Spring Festival period.
