China, Japan Build Bridges to Cross Scientific Divide

Looking forward to economic globalization in the 21st century, China is actively co-operating with more and more countries in the science and technology fields, a senior science official said Wednesday.

China has opened up several state-level scientific programmes to the world ranging from basic research to high-tech development plans.

Foreign scientists are being invited to fuel China's scientific progress as well as solve common issues concerning the whole world, said Ma Songde, vice-minister of science and technology.

Ma made the remarks at a conference marking the 20th anniversary of Sino-Japanese co-operation on science and technology held yesterday in Beijing.

He said China has also opened up some key laboratories to foreign scientists to help promote international co-operation on science and technology.

"Sino-Japanese co-operation on science and technology has become an indispensable part of the bilateral relationship. China is willing to promote future co-operation with Japan and other countries," said Ma, who is responsible for international co-operation in the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Tanino Sakutarou, Japanese ambassador to China, said the bilateral exchanges between China and Japan have been successfully conducted over the past few years. The two governments have been collaborating on such fields as the environment, earth science, energy and agriculture, said Sakutarou.

"What will life be like in the 21st century? The dream of the future will rely on science and technology. Scientists from China and Japan should conduct in-depth exchanges to map out a rosy future," said Sakutarou.

Ikeda Kaname, an official with the Science and Technology Agency of Japan, said China has made steady progress in economic growth and will take big strides this century. Meanwhile Japan has been implementing the strategy of "science and technology, the foundation of building the country."

He suggested the two countries widen the exchange of information between researchers and officials, and reinforce collaboration on earth science, the environment, life science and natural sciences.

"To solve environmental and other economic issues which have brought obstacles to the human race, I'm pinning high hopes on Sino-Japanese science and technology co-operation based on the principle of equality and mutual benefit," said Kaname. (Chinadaily)
