Beijing to Invest Heavily in Cultural Relics ProtectionBeijing started the maintenance work on a series of cultural relics Wednesday. Local government officials said the efforts are to remind visitors and local residents of the city's long history. The project will last three years and cost 330 million yuan (about 39.6 million U.S. dollars).A dozen of cultural relics, including the Temple of Heaven, the Confucius Temple and the Ruins of the Yuanmingyuan Imperial Garden, have been listed in this year's maintenance plan. Beijing owns over 7,000 cultural relics, with 24 under State protection. Since the 1980s, the Chinese capital has invested 40 million yuan in repairs and renovation of these cultural treasures. |
