Yunnan Earthquake Claims Heavy Losses
An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale that rocked Wuding County in southwest China's Yunnan Province Monday evening has left one person dead, injured eight others, and affected nearly 170,000 people.
The earthquake also destroyed 3, 300 rooms, killed 59 animals, and seriously damaged local water conservation facilities, transportation, communication and other infrastructure, resulting in more than 300 million yuan in economic losses, according to the county magistrate.
Ten tons of rice and 300,000 yuan of capital were rushed to the quake-hit areas. Rescue work is going on smoothly. No outbreaks of epidemic has been reported, sources said.
An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted the county in 1995.
