Ericsson Clinches Massive Contracts with China Unicom

Ericsson signed Wednesday a series of contracts China Unicom to supply equipment for Unicom's GSM projects at its five provincial branches.

Under the contracts, valued at 176 million US dollars, Ericsson will supply equipment and services for China Unicom's GSM 900 networks expansion in the five provinces of Jilin, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hubei. This will increase the total capacity of Ericsson's GSM networks in these five provinces to 3.83 million subscribers, an Ericsson spokesman said.

Ericsson's two key manufacturing joint ventures in China, Beijing Ericsson Mobile Communications Co. Ltd. and Nanjing Ericsson Mobile Communication Co. Ltd., will supply the equipment and services.

Listed on the Hong Kong and New York stock markets in June this year, China Unicom is the country's second largest telecommunications operator, providing a full range of telecommunications services such as domestic and international long-distance call services, mobile phone and data/IP network communications.

Ericsson now supplies a large quantity of its radio base stations, switches and transmission equipment as well as services to China Unicom both in wired and wireless systems. The two sides have increased their working relationship in such areas as project financing, after-sale service and on-the-job training.
