HK Government Backs Development of Chinese Medicine: Official

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government encourages private sector and academic circle to join hands in developing traditional Chinese medicine, a Hong Kong official said on Tuesday.

Hong Kong's century-old Chinese medicine manufacturer Eu Yan Sang Limited Tuesday announced its collaboration with the Chinese University of Hong Kong to conduct scientific research in the action mechanism and bio-active ingredient of the Bak Foong Pill, Eu Yan Sang's flagship product.

Speaking at the teaming-up ceremony, Francis Ho, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology of Hong Kong, said the two sides' joint research project is fully in line with the SAR government's policy of building Hong Kong into a traditional Chinese medicine hub.

Chief Executive of the HKSAR government Tung Chee Hwa has raised in his policy address the goal of developing Hong Kong into an international Chinese medicine center, and to this end, the government has worked out a ten-year plan, Ho said.

The role of the Hong Kong government is to, under the guideline of free market, create to the maximum a most favorable environment for more private enterprises to participate in the development of Chinese medicine products, he said.

That is why the Innovation and Technology Fund under the Innovation and Technology Commission of the SAR government contributed half of the 9.28 million HK dollars (1.19 million U.S.dollars) for the joint research and development project between Eu

Yan Sang and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Ho said. The other half of the fund will come from En Yan Sang Limited.

The three-year research and development project will focus on examining the action mechanisms and bio-active ingredients of the Bak Foong Pill and related formulae. Based on such findings, the two sides will seek future opportunities to produce new formulae that can be used to treat other health conditions for women.

The Bak Foong Pill, besides maintaining overall health for women, is more well known for its medicine ability to relieve various gynecological disorder and symptoms.
