Construction started Tuesday on a major navigational channel at Tianjin port, the largest in north China.

According to a port official, the construction of the channel, which is designed to accommodate 100,000-ton cargo ships, will be completed in August next year.

The current channel of the port is 28.1 km long, 12 meters deep and 180 meters wide, the official said, adding that the new channel will be 28.8 km long, 15 meters deep and 200 meters wide.

The construction will involve a total investment of 168 million yuan (about 20.25 million U.S. dollars), he added.
