Medical Insurance System to Be Set Up in Cities by End of The Year

The medical insurance system will be established in urban areas of the country by the end of the year, Minister of Labor and Social Security Zhang Zuoji said Tuesday.

By the end of June, about 146 Chinese cities had set up the new system, which covered a total of 14 million urban residents, Zhang told an ongoing forum here on the medical insurance system.

China began in 1998 the medical reforms for urban residents. Much progress has been made over the past two years, and the overall situation has been quite good, Zhang said.

However, about 58 percent of the cities have not started medical insurance reforms and the overall job of implementing such reforms is enormous.
