Developing West China by Science, Technology: OfficialChinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing has stressed the importance of developing the economically backward western part of the country by giving top priority to developing science, technology and education.He also emphasized the introduction of innovative conception, new ways of thinking, updated mechanism and science and technology in implementing the government's strategy to develop the underdeveloped areas. Li made the remarks during a study tour of Ningxia Hui and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regions, both in the northwest, from August 14-21. During his trip, the vice-premier talked with local leaders and inspected a number of schools, research institutions, enterprises, poverty-eradication projects, and water conservancy facilities. He praised the efforts by local authorities to develop local economy, consolidate unity among people of different ethnic groups, and maintain social stability. All this has helped push ahead the social progress in an all-about way, he said. He called on the local people not to miss the historic opportunities of launching the strategy to develop the west and the new scientific and technological revolution in the new century. Learning from the past, top priority must be given to developing science, technology and education during the whole process of developing the vast western areas, Li noted. The development of the west calls for a high-quality personnel, the development of science and technology, and the cultural and ethic progress, he said. The vice premier also demanded that local research and educational sector s speed up their reforms to provide the west with more technological achievements and professionals. The central government and the developed eastern part of the country will also give greater assistance to help develop the educational sector in the west, Li stated.
