Beijing Builds New Highway to Circle CapitalBeijing has started construction of the capital's 93-kilometer-long Fifth Ring Road to alleviate traffic congestion in the city, according to Tuesday's Chinadaily. The new highway will run through Chaoyang, Haidian, Shijingshan, Fengtai and Daxing districts and is designed for cars traveling at 100-120 kilometers per hour. The new road will also connect 10 business areas located on the city outskirts, including Wangjing, Beiyuan and Qinghe. The first phase of the construction will create a 2.75-kilometer stretch of road, which will be finished by November. The new highway will be four to six lanes wide. Authorities hope that the Fifth Ring Road, together with the renovation of the Fourth Ring Road to be completed by the end of the year, will improve Beijing's infrastructure and benefit the city's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.
