NPC Session Opens in Beijing

China's top legislature, the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC), began a five-day session Monday to deliberate seven draft laws and amendments.

Li Peng, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over today's meeting.

During the session, lawmakers are scheduled to deliberate four drafts: the draft Extradition Law, and the draft amendments to the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Returned Overseas Chinese and the Family Members of Overseas Chinese, to the Pharmaceutical Administration Law and to the Law on the Administration of Tax Collection.

The draft amendments to the Patent Law and the Fishery Law, and the draft National Current Language Law were submitted to today's meeting for deliberation and examination.

Members of the NPC Standing Committee will also discuss some draft financial plans of the central government for this year.

They will also listen to reports from government officials on various issues, including the work being done to promote science and education in the country, and the implementation of the national economic and social development plan.
