More Protection Effort for World Heritage Site

The government of the Naxi Autonomous County of Lijiang in southwest China's Yunnan Province will invest 180 million yuan to protect the ancient town of Lijiang.

The funds will be used to renovate the town's wooden buildings, install firefighting systems, add facilities to supply water and improve other infrastructure facilities.

The ancient town, situated on a plateau 2,600 meters above sea level, was founded in 1127. It is well known for "Dongba Classic," a hieroglyphic language with 1,500 words created by ancestors of the Naxi ethnic group.

The ancient town was put on the World Heritage list by UNESCO in 1998.
