End-of-Life Service Center Established in Macao

An end-of-life service center, partly funded by the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government, was put into operation Monday to provide care for those with incurable diseases.

Located in the Macao Kiang Wu Hospital, the hospice provides a full range of services such as nursing, psychological assistance and the relief of sorrow.

"The hospice is aimed at offering care for patients of terminal cancer so that they can complete the last stage of their life in peace and dignity instead of suffering from extreme misery of the mind and body," said Fong Chi Keong, vice-director of the Kiang Wu Charitable Association.

He noted that end-of-life service is a kind of benevolence which shows the compassionate love of the modern society.

Following special assessments by doctors of the hospital, patients can be admitted and stay in the hospice for 14 days free of charge. And they can stay on if necessary.

Cancer is the No. 2 cause of death in Macao. Among a local population of 430,000, an average of 350 people die of cancer each year.
