Dozens Injured in Kenyan Train Crash; Resulting Explosion Kills 18

Nine runaway train cars, some carrying liquefied gas, derailed at a station south of Nairobi, igniting a fireball that killed 18 people, injured dozens and consumed nearby houses, witnesses and officials said Sunday.

All but two of the victims lived in homes close to Athi station, 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of the capital, that were destroyed in the explosion around midnight (2100 hours GMT) Saturday, they said. The other two killed were in the area from nearby slums, officials said.

18 bodies have been recovered so far, said Kariuki Kimani, the police officer in charge of the town of Athi River. Local hospitals reported at least 36 injured, some with severe burns.
