Chinese, NZ FMs Discuss Bilateral Relations

China hopes to further expand its cooperation with New Zealand in a variety of areas based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan made the remarks in talks with Philip Goff, minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Justice of New Zealand, Monday afternoon.

Tang said bilateral relations have been developing steadily in recent years thanks to joint efforts.

He said further growth of friendship and cooperation between the two countries accords to fundamental interests of the people of the two countries, and will be conducive to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

He also expounded the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue, appreciating the New Zealander government's adherence to the one-China policy.

Goff said bilateral relations have maintained strong momentum since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972, pointing to rapidly growing two-way trade and increased exchanges in some new areas.

New Zealand is willing to join hands with China to move bilateral relations forward in the years ahead, he said.

He said the two countries share the same views on many issues. New Zealand's government places great importance on and understands the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue, adding that the successive governments of New Zealand have followed the one-China policy adopted by the current government.

Goff arrived in Beijing Sunday evening on an official visit to China.
