Premier Zhu Meets Social Security Experts

Chinese Premier Meets Social Security Experts
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met with participants of the China Development Forum on Social Security Reform at the Great Hall of the People Monday.

The forum, sponsored by the Development Research Center (DRC) under the State Council, opened yesterday focusing on the financing, fund management and government administration of the fledging social security system of China.

Along with Chinese experts, a dozen internationally famous scholars and government officials from several countries attended the two-day forum.

The Premier exchanged views with foreign experts on China's security system during today's meeting, expressing thanks for their concern and vowing to carefully study their suggestions and proposals.

He said the social security system constitutes an important part of the socialist market economy and bears on the overall reform of the country.

The establishment of a good social security system would lay a sound foundation for the economic development and social stability of China in the 21st century, he pointed out.

Professor Martin Feldstein from Harvard University of the United States, also chairman of the American National Research Bureau, Senior Advisor of the World Bank Alfonzo Revollo of Bolivia, and Professor Heinz Steinmeyer of the Muenster University of Germany expressed their opinions during the meeting.

They said that China has so far set up a primary social security with Chinese characteristics.
