China Completes Ten Gas Pipelines in Its WestChina has built ten gas pipelines in its west over the past five years, in a bid to speed up the development and utilization of natural gas resources there, according to China Petroleum News. The ten gas pipelines, with a total length of 3,630 kilometers, are linking major gas production bases in the region with the newly-built petrochemical projects in Xinjiang, Qinghai, Ningxia, Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan and Chongqing. The ten gas pipelines are part of the country's huge energy project designed to send gas from west to east, which is expected to be completed by early 2003. China is striving to increase the rate of natural gas in its energy consumption from the present two percent to eight percent by 2020, according to the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). Priority has been given to laying gas pipelines extending from major gas production areas in Sichuan Province in the southwest, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Xinjiang in the northwest, to the developed areas in the east and the Pearl River Delta in the south. A long-distance gas pipeline running from Shaanxi to Beijing has been completed and is now operational.
