Shantou SEZ Values High-Tech Industrial Development

Shantou Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in south China's Guangdong Province is striving to build itself into an important base of high-tech industries by the year of 2008.

It will also strive to become an export base, a region to pilot socialist market economy and a demonstration area for sustainable development.

Shantou is famous for being the hometown for a great number of people of Chinese origin now residing abroad. In the past 20 years, it has approved 3,518 overseas-backed projects, through which, 5.07 billion U.S. dollars of overseas funds have been pumped into this southern Chinese coastal city.

Shantou's industrial sector has been expanding at an annual average rate of 27 percent in the past 20 years. By 1999, its industrial output value amounted to 73.9 billion yuan.

China now has five SEZs: Shenzhen, Xiamen, Zhuhai, Shantou and Hainan.
