Chinese Legislature to Consider Seven Law DraftsThe Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, started a five-day session Monday to consider seven law drafts.Li Peng, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over today's meeting. Lawmakers are scheduled to deliberate two draft laws during the session, which are the the Common Language Law and the Extradition Law. Draft amendments to the Patent Law, the Fisheries Law and three other laws will also be submitted for deliberation and examination. Members of the NPC Standing Committee will discuss some draft financial plans of the central government for this year, including expanding the size of national debt and readjusting the central budget. They will also listen to reports from government officials on various issues, including the work being done to promote science and education in the country, and the implementation of the National Economic and Social Development Program and the Land Management Law.
