Oxygenerator Blast Claims 14 Lives

Fourteen people were killed and 18 others injured in a major oxygenerator explosion in an iron and steel plant in east China's Jiangxi Province in the zero hour of Monday morning.

The blast occurred at 00:10 am when an oxygenerator was undergoing overhauling in Pingxiang Iron and Steel Plant. The blast led to the collapse in part of a two-storied cement-brick workshop building.

More than 40 employees were working at the workshops when the oxygenerator exploded, sources said.

Public security officers and fire fighters rushed to the scene soon and the injured were hospitalized. Provincial governor Shu Shengyou and vice-governor Wang Jun also went to the scene to direct the rescue work.
