Liberia Arrests Four Foreigners on Spying Charges

Four journalists employed by Britain's Channel Four television have been arrested on spying charges in Liberia.

The group, two Britons, a South African and a Sierra Leonean, were arrested Friday in their hotel rooms in Liberia's capital Monrovia. They will probably appear in court on Monday.

Liberian Justice Minister Eddington Varmah says the four, in Liberia to make a documentary for Britain's Channel Four, have threatened state security.

A junior minister says the four were trying to implicate Liberia falsely in diamond sumggling and gun running using pre-arranged information.

Channel Four denies the allegations, saying the crew was engaged in legitimate journalistic activities.

Britain and the United States have accused the Liberian government of involvement in sales of diamonds mined by Revolutionary United Front rebels in neighbouring Sierra Leone.
