Jiang Congratulates on Unveiling of Bethune Statue

Chinese President Jiang Zemin extends warm congratulations on the unveiling of the bronze statue of Canadian Doctor Norman Bethune in a letter announced Saturday at the unveiling ceremony in Dr. Bethune's hometown, Gravenhurst, Ontario. The full text of the letter is as follows:

"On the occasion of the inauguration of the bronze statue of Dr.Bethune, I wish to express, on behalf of the Chinese government and people and in my own name, my warm congratulations to the Memorial Hall of Bethune.

Dr. Bethune is an outstanding son of the Canadian people and a great friend of the Chinese people. He came to China, making light of traveling thousands of miles, to help the Chinese people in the War of Resistance against Japanese aggression and sacrificed his precious life for this cause. Though more than six decades have passed, his name remains a household word in China. His spirit of internationalism and his utter devotion to others without any thought of self are still on everyone's lips around China. He has become the symbol of the long-standing friendship between our two peoples. Today, the seeds of Sino-Canadian friendship that he personally sown have yielded rich fruits.

May the spirit of Dr. Bethune shine perpetually!

May Sino-Canadian friendship last forever!"
