Japanese Cities Protest Against US Nuclear Test

Two Japanese cities protested Saturday against the United States' 12th subcritical nuclear test, which was conducted Friday at an underground test site in Nevada.

Nagasaki and Hiroshima, which experienced nuclear attacks, sent a letter of protest to the US government, saying the United States should immediately stop the tests as they dampen global efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Nagasaki Mayor Itcho Ito appealed to the international community to start multilateral negotiations for an early conclusion of a treaty banning all nuclear weapons.

The United States dropped atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945, killing more than 200,000 people.
