Former Japanese PM Visits Memorial of Nanjing Massacre

Former Japanese Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu said Saturday in Nanjing that the peoples of Japan and China should work together for the peace of Asia.

He made the remarks when he visited the Memorial of Nanjing Massacre in this capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province.

Also a member of the Japanese House of Representatives, Kaifu laid a wreath to the platform on which the number of victims -- 300,000 -- was inscribed.

He then visited the memorial hall and the pit where more than 10,000 victims were buried.

Kaifu said he felt depressed after visiting the memorial. He stressed that such an event should never happen again, and the Japanese and Chinese peoples should work together for the peace and development of Asia.

Kaifu arrived here on Friday. He was met by Hui Liangyu, secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Chen Huanyou, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress.
