24 Hours Service Popular in Shanghai

Businesses that are open 24 hours a day have become increasingly popular in Shanghai, China's largest industrial and commercial city, which has a total population of over 14 million.

Supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, bookstores, teahouses and other service industries are competing with each other to adopt this around-the-clock service in order to meet the huge market demand.

"We bring convenience to our customers and they bring extra profit to us," said the owner of a 24 hour teahouse.

The city has also opened 24 hour hotlines to provide travel, traffic, weather forecast and other services to the residents.

According to scholars, the growing popularity of 24-hour service is the result of the booming market.

"It is a symbol of urban development, showing that Shanghai has come to be a real, mature international metropolis," said Zhou Weilin, an economics' professor at Fudan University.
