Bangladesh, China Sign Contract for Construction of Paksey BridgeAn agreement to construct the Paksey Bridge over Padma river in the Pabna district, some 160 kilometers west to Dhaka, was signed Thursday between Bangladesh's Roads and Highways Department of the Ministry of Communications and China's Major Bridge Engineering Bureau (MBEB) of the Railways Ministry.The 1.8-kilometer-long and 18.1-meter-wide road bridge, to be built under Japanese assistance at a cost of 6.47 billion taka (US$120 million), will be the second longest bridge in the country. After its completion by the year 2003, the bridge, which will connect the country's northern region with the southwestern part, will play an important role in transportation of goods under transit arrangements among Bangladesh, Nepal and India, said an official handout. The Chinese contractors, MBEB, will build the main bridge as well as carry out the river training works. |
