First Group of Three-Gorges Dam Migrants Arrive in Shanghai

The first group of migrants leaving Chongqing municipality to make way for the construction of China's Three Gorges Project, arrived at Chongming Island in Shanghai Thursday.

After a 1,700-km voyage, the 639 people were warmly greeted by Shanghai residents. The newcomers are being settled in 11 townships. Every household will be provided with a 150-square-meter house and daily necessities such as electric rice cookers, thermos bottles, tableware and a month's supply of grain.

After a 1,700-km voyage, the 639 people were warmly greeted by Shanghai residents.

Chen Liangyu, vice-mayor of Shanghai, said at the welcoming ceremony that Shanghai is obliged to offer a helping hand to the migrants.

The newcomers are being settled in 11 townships. Every household will be provided with a 150-square-meter house and daily necessities such as electric rice cookers, thermos bottles, tableware and a month's supply of grain.

Another 6,700 people in Chongqing will be relocated to Jiangsu, Guangdong and other coastal provinces before September 1.

The entire relocation project will involve 1.13 million people in 20 counties and prefectures by 2009, when the project is due for completion.
