Israeli Army Expresses Condolences Over Death of Palestinian Man

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF)Thursday expressed condolences over the death of a 73-year-old

Palestinian man who was shot dead on Wednesday during an IDF's military action near the West Bank city of Ramallah.

The condolences over the man, Mahmoud Abdullah, were relayed at the conclusion of the IDF investigation into the shooting incident,Israel Radio reported.

An IDF spokesman said Abdullah opened fire on the troops from the roof of his home in the West Bank village of Surda in area B under Israeli military control and Palestinian self-rule. The

soldiers returned fire, wounding him in the head. The man died later on the way to hospital.

Abdullah's son said that his father opened fire because he misdeemed the Israeli soldiers as thieves, and that his house had been looted by burglars last year.

Abdullah is an uncle of Hassan Abdel Rahman, the Palestinian National Authority's representative in Washington.

Following the incident, the atmosphere in the village grew tense. IDF soldiers and Palestinian security officers tried to calm down the situation there. the IDF conducted an immediate

investigation into the incident.
