Vice Premier Inspects Drought-stricken Areas

Chinese Vice Premier Wen Jiabao has called for more efforts to combat drought in North China's Shanxi and Hebei provinces.

Since spring, parts of Shanxi and Hebei provinces have been hit by severe droughts. In some areas, farmers and their animals have not had enough water to drink.

In his inspection to the areas from August 15 to 17, Wen said that all governments in drought-stricken areas should work hard to fight the droughts, and ensure normal agricultural and industrial operations.

He also voiced his appreciation of the government drought-relief efforts in the Luliang Prefecture of Shanxi Province.

In his talks with government officials and farmers, Wen said that it was necessary to explore the reasons behind the worsening droughts that hit the areas in recent years.

The vice premier noted that it was essential to strengthen the construction of agricultural infrastructure, and improve the ecological environment.
