Sri Lankan Parliament to Be Dissolved Ahead of Schedule
Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Friday declared that the parliament will be dissolved on the midnight of the same day, six days ahead of schedule.
Government spokesman Ariya Rubasinghe said the next general elections will be held on October 10. Nominations will be called from August 28 to September 4.
The six-year term of the current 225-member parliament stands dissolved on August 24. But President Kumaratunga has the power to dissolve the parliament ahead of schedule.
