Li Peng Meets Kenya Parliament Speaker

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), told Francis Kaparo, speaker of the Kenyan National Assembly, that China highly appreciates the long-term support from Kenya on issues of human rights, Taiwan and Tibet.

Li made the remarks during a meeting with Kaparo and his delegation at this summer resort some 300 kilometers east of Beijing. Kaparo arrived in Beijing Wednesday as the guest of Li Peng.

The Chinese NPC chairman stressed that China hopes to continue to cooperate with Kenya in various areas on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

In addition, Li said the NPC of China also wishes to strengthen its relations and cooperation with the Kenyan National Assembly.

Li added that the current visit by Kaparo himself and the Kenyan delegation will help increase understanding between the people and parliaments of the two countries.

Li told Kaparo that at the upcoming Conference of Presiding Officers of National Parliaments--to be held in the U.N. headquarters starting in late August--he will call for reform of the global political and economic order, and establish a new order that is just and rational.

Kaparo assured Li that African countries and other developing countries will undoubtedly support China's position at the summit.

Kaparo said Kenya will continue to observe its one-China policy, and that the Kenyan people are grateful to China's assistance since they won independence of the country.

Li Peng asked Kaparo to convey to Kenyan President Daniel Moi greetings from Chinese President Jiang Zemin and himself when he returns to Kenya. Kaparo in return conveyed greetings to Jiang and Li from the Kenyan people and President Moi.

In addition to Beijing, Kaparo will also travel to Anhui province in east China and Shanghai.
